WHAT’S COOKING

Fat Apples, large and relatively new, offers genuine character, 240 comfort-food options, over 120 fountain and bar drinks, and 75 breakfast or brunch choices - an understandable favorite with neighborhood folk.

Brunch turns out banner hot oat meal, bagel platter replete smoked salmon, cream cheese, red onions, tomatoes and capers; crusty cinnamon raisin French toast dusted with powered sugar, arranged with eggs sunny side up; varied fluffy waffles, including waffle sundae’s and excellent Alpine omelets made with ham, mushrooms, onions and Swiss cheese.

Fat Apples also has low cholesterol omelets, jumbo buttermilk pancakes, and an endless procession of over-stuffed sandwiches.

Best desserts: great coffee cake, cheesecake, fruit pies, strawberry short cake, and brownies.

Fat Apples, 2nd Av. (at 65th St.), NY. (212) 308-0600. B-L-D daily. Ent. $11.95-$15.95. Acc. maj. cc.
