NEW GROUND

Newcomer, Chick Inn is a small, unpretentious comfort-food restaurant with casual serviced and a menu and kitchen that is generally undistinguished.

Nevertheless, portions are generous with budget prices. Most differentiating characteristic is Chick Inn’s “breakfast all day” policy, offering French toast to 3-egg omelets. Dishes of specific interest: meatloaf, good mini-burgers, hot dogs with all the trimmings, roast chicken, and an unpleasant fishy fish fry. There are hot and cold sandwiches, salads, and sides like buttery mashed potatoes, carelessly burnt roasted sweet corn, baked beans, and mac and cheese.

Fountain drinks range from egg creams to milk shakes to knockout cherries and cream, as well as curious tasting brownies.

Chick Inn, 420 Hudson St., NY. (212) 675-0810. L-D. Ent. $7.95-$8.95. Beer & wine. Acc. cash only.
